Summary
This scoping mission will bring together three partners- Fauna and Flora International, the University of Liberia and the Forestry Development Authority- to collaboratively develop a programme of work to equip young Liberian scientists with the necessary knowledge and skills to meet the considerable challenges facing natural resources managers. It is likely that this will involve the inclusion of new modules in the UoL undergraduate curriculum to bring it in line with international standards. In addition, we will explore the potential for the creation of a Centre of Excellence for Ecological Research and Conservation Learning in Sapo, Liberia’s only National Park, facilitating access of both students and FDA recruits to practical field and research experience.
Planned activities
1. Initial meeting of scoping mission steering committee to be held with representatives from FFI, UL and FDA to discuss goals and roles of participating organisations.
2. Review the current UL undergraduate curriculum for forestry to give a clearer understanding of course aims and content.
3. Conduct undergraduate and graduate forester’s skills needs assessment
4. Develop ideas for addressing skills training gaps through the inclusion of new undergraduate modules.
5. Develop on outline of the role of the Centre of Excellence for Ecological Research and Conservation Learning
6. Establish long-term management and funding options for the Centre of Excellence
